Public (MPI), no-fault (PIPP)
Auto insurance in Manitoba
What's required, what's optional, and how claims work — with every figure sourced and dated.
The system
Manitoba's auto insurance is public, through Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), and no-fault for injuries via the Personal Injury Protection Plan (PIPP). Basic Autopac provides compulsory coverage plus PIPP no-fault injury benefits.
What's mandatory
The statutory minimum third-party liability in Manitoba is $200,000. Basic Autopac (MPI) includes compulsory coverage with no-fault Personal Injury Protection Plan (PIPP) benefits for injury.
What's optional (and worth understanding)
Extension coverage and higher liability are available through MPI or brokers.
How claims and disputes work
Use MPI's internal review, then the applicable appeal commission; rates are overseen by the Public Utilities Board and conduct by the Manitoba Financial Services Agency.
Out-of-country health
Manitoba Health covers limited emergency care outside Canada. Travel medical recommended. See the Travel & Snowbird tool to size the gap.
